There are moments when the world seems to hand us the perfect mirror.
Not a pleasant one…
but a precise one.
Recently, I found myself looking at a situation in the news that stirred something in me.
TSA agents working… not getting paid.
Others making the decisions… continuing to receive their pay.
And almost instantly, that familiar feeling arose:
“That’s not fair.”
But as I’ve come to understand through this journey…
Whenever something feels that charged,
it’s not just happening “out there.”
It’s knocking on a door in here.
The Irritation Is the Invitation
What if double standards aren’t the problem…
What if they’re the doorway?
Because if I’m honest…
The moment I see hypocrisy in someone else,
there’s usually a quiet whisper underneath it:
“I would never do that.”
And yet…
If I sit long enough…
if I’m willing to be radically honest…
I begin to see:
There are places in my own life
where I’ve expected more from others
than I’ve required of myself.
Maybe not in the same form.
But in the same energy.
And that’s where the shift begins.
The Ego Loves Exceptions
The ego’s favorite game is not just judgment…
It’s selective judgment.
“I’ll be kind… when they deserve it.”
“I’ll forgive… but not that.”
“I’ll be fair… except in this situation.”
In other words:
Love… with conditions.
But love doesn’t operate that way.
Love has no double standard.
Love has only one.
One Standard Only
A Course in Miracles says:
"To have, give all to all."
Not selectively.
Not when it’s easy.
Not when it’s deserved.
All… to all.
Which means…
If I want to know myself as forgiven,
I must be willing to forgive.
If I want to experience peace,
I cannot withhold it from another.
If I want to live in a world of fairness,
I must stop creating exceptions.
Because the standard I apply to others
is the standard I live inside of.
This Is Where It Gets Real
It’s easy to point at the world and say:
“They shouldn’t be doing that.”
But the deeper question is:
Where am I still doing this… in my own life?
- Where do I expect understanding… but withhold it?
- Where do I want grace… but offer judgment?
- Where do I believe the rules apply… differently?
Not to shame ourselves.
But to free ourselves.
Because every double standard I hold
is a place where my peace is divided.
No Order of Difficulty
Here’s the part the ego doesn’t like…
There is no hierarchy here.
The irritation I feel over something “big” in the world
and the irritation I feel over something “small” in my life…
They disturb my peace in the same way.
Which means…
The opportunity for healing
is always right here.
Right now.
Not out there.
A Gentle Return
So instead of asking:
“Why are they like that?”
We can begin to ask:
“What is this showing me about where I am still not choosing love?”
And even more tenderly:
“What would it feel like… to choose only one standard?”
Not the ego’s standard.
But Love’s.
Lainaism
“When I stop making exceptions to Love…
I finally experience it.”
Closing Transmission
Beloved…
The world will continue to show us contrast.
That’s part of the classroom.
But you and I…
We are not here to fix the world.
We are here to recognize
where we are still divided within ourselves…
and gently return to wholeness.
One moment.
One choice.
One standard.
Love.
And, guess what?
