Last week, Americans celebrated Independence Day.
We waved flags.
We gathered with family and friends.
We watched fireworks light up the night sky.
And we remembered a declaration written 250 years ago that proclaimed a simple but revolutionary idea:
God endowed each of us with the inalienable right to liberty!
But this year, I find myself asking a different question.
Am I truly free?
Not politically.
Personally.
Because if someone else's opinion can ruin my day...
Am I free?
If fear makes my decisions...
Am I free?
If my past still determines my future...
Am I free?
If my happiness depends upon what another person says, does, believes, or approves of...
Am I truly independent?
A Course in Miracles offers a declaration that reaches even deeper than any political document.
It simply says:
"I am not a victim of the world I see."
Those words are nothing less than a declaration of inner independence.
They remind us that the greatest revolution doesn't happen in governments.
It happens in consciousness.
For years, I believed freedom meant changing my circumstances.
Finding the right relationship.
Making more money.
Living in a better place.
Having people understand me.
Then Awareness gently revealed something that changed everything.
The prison wasn't outside me.
It was the habit of believing something outside me held the key.
Every time I blamed...
Every time I waited...
Every time I believed someone else had the power to determine my peace...
I quietly surrendered the freedom God had already given me.
That realization wasn't discouraging.
It was liberating.
Because if I was the one giving my power away...
I could stop.
Perhaps that's what true Independence Day is really celebrating.
Not merely freedom from external authority...
But freedom from every thought that says:
"I cannot be happy, safe, or at peace until..."
The ego is always waiting for the world to change.
Love quietly whispers,
"Begin with your mind."
Every miracle begins there.
Every forgiveness begins there.
Every lasting freedom begins there.
Integration in Daily Life
In the spirit of July 4th, use this week to notice the moments when your peace seems to depend upon something outside of you.
Instead of asking,
"How can I change this situation?"
Pause and gently ask,
"Where have I given this the power to determine how I feel?"
Don't judge yourself.
Simply notice.
Awareness itself begins restoring the freedom you thought had been lost.

Within every circumstance.
No government can grant it.
No relationship can take it away.
No past can imprison it.
It has always been yours because God gave it to you.
May Independence Day become more than a national celebration.
May it become a holy remembrance.
The freedom you've been searching for...
has never been outside you.
It has been patiently waiting within.
